The March of the Desperate

Can you imagine having to leave your home in search of basic food and medicine?

Right now I'm counting my blessings, I'm not one of the desperate people flocking out of Venezuela looking for food and medicine for my family.

Hi! My name is Lori Snyder. I started Mama’s Mama after my family and I were given a “wake up call” when our power went out for two weeks in the middle of winter. Without electricity, we had no heat, no light, no water and the food in our refrigerator would be useless very quickly. Within minutes I realized I was living in my grandmother’s world and wished I had paid more attention to the things she tried to teach me. She would have known what to do and how to do it, That experience showed me very plainly just how vulnerable our modern lifestyle has made us and how quickly the things we depend on (like electricity) can disappear. Mama’s Mama is place to collect and share the skills and wisdom our grandmothers used to make their homes warm and inviting and keep their families healthy and happy without the technology and services we depend on today. Even if I never spend another minute without electricity, I’ve found that I love having a touch of yesteryear in my home. I cook from scratch more, I garden and preserve the things I grow, I re use things I would have thrown away and when I need something now, I’m more likely to make it myself than head to a store to buy it. The fact that we are prepared now for just about any emergency or disaster situation just gives me added peace of mind. I hope you’ll comment on the posts and share the tips and skills you learned from your mama’s mama. I’m looking forward to learning from you and I’ll try as many of your suggestions as I can and post the results here.
